Who is behind the Coffeyville Data Center Accountability initiative?
We are everyday, concerned Coffeyville residents and local taxpayers. Led by a father & son team—who care deeply about the future of our town. We are not a political action committee, political party, or funded outside organization. Our initiative is a completely independent, grassroots community effort created to ensure our neighbors are informed and that city leadership remains transparent and accountable to local citizens.
Are we opposed to technology or economic development?
No. We support thoughtful, sustainable economic growth that brings lasting quality jobs and benefits to our local economy. However, speculative mega data centers typically generate fewer than 20 permanent jobs while demanding up to 40 megawatts of municipal power and immense water resources. We believe high-impact industrial projects must have clear community safeguards, fair taxation, and public approval before moving forward.
Why are you calling for a 12-month moratorium?
A moratorium is simply a temporary legal pause. Because city leaders discussed data center proposals for over 14 months behind closed doors, Coffeyville currently lacks the zoning ordinances, noise limits, and environmental protections needed for such massive facilities. A 12-month pause gives our community time to study the facts, review independent utility assessments, and establish proper protections without being rushed into binding contracts.
Will a data center impact my monthly electric and water bills?
Without strict ratepayer protections, yes. Regional grid operators and utilities often invest hundreds of millions of dollars into substations and transmission lines to serve massive data loads, costs that frequently get shifted onto residential ratepayers. Additionally, large-scale cooling systems place heavy demand on regional water tables. We are fighting to ensure that 100% of these infrastructure costs stay with the developers.
